EDUCATION
Understanding Futures Profit & Loss
Futures profit and loss is calculated by multiplying the price difference between entry and exit by the contract multiplier and the number of contracts traded. Unlike stocks, futures use a multiplier that determines the dollar value of each point of price movement, making it essential to understand your contract specifications before placing a trade.
The formula is: P&L = (Exit Price - Entry Price) x Contract Size x Number of Contracts. For example, if you buy 2 E-mini S&P 500 futures at 4,500 and sell at 4,650, each point is worth $50, so your profit is (4,650 - 4,500) x 50 x 2 = $15,000. The ROI is calculated against the full notional value of the position at entry.
Because futures are leveraged instruments, small price movements produce amplified gains and losses relative to the margin required. A 3.33% move in the underlying index can produce significantly larger returns on your deposited margin. This leverage cuts both ways, so careful position sizing and risk management are critical for every futures trader.
