Understanding Bill Splitting

Splitting a bill evenly is the simplest and most common way to divide restaurant costs among a group. While some groups prefer to pay for exactly what each person ordered, an even split avoids the complexity of itemizing and is generally faster and simpler. Adding a tip on top before splitting ensures the server is properly compensated.

The formulas are: Tip Amount = Total Bill x Tip% / 100, then Total with Tip = Total Bill + Tip Amount, and finally Per Person = Total with Tip / Number of People. Tipping customs vary by country, but in the United States, 15-20% is standard for table service at restaurants, with 20% or more for exceptional service.

For example, a $186.50 bill split among 4 people with a 20% tip works out to a $37.30 tip, making the total $223.80. Each person pays $55.95. At 15% the per-person share drops to $53.62, while at 25% it rises to $58.28. Having these numbers ready makes settling the bill quick and eliminates awkward calculations at the table.
