Understanding Break-Even Price
The break-even price is the minimum selling price at which a trade returns zero profit and zero loss after factoring in all costs. It accounts for your purchase price plus any commissions on both the buy and sell sides. The formula is: Break-Even Price = (Buy Price x Shares + Buy Commission + Sell Commission) / Shares.
Understanding your break-even point is critical before entering any trade. It tells you the exact price the stock must reach before you start making money. With commission-free brokers, the break-even price equals the buy price. However, when commissions are involved, you need the stock to move up by enough to cover those costs first.
For example, if you buy 100 shares at $150 with a $9.99 buy commission and a $9.99 sell commission, your total cost is $15,009.99 and your total commissions are $19.98. The break-even price is $150.20 per share, meaning the stock must rise $0.20 (0.133%) above your buy price just to cover your trading costs. This effect is more pronounced with smaller positions, where commissions take a bigger percentage bite out of your returns.
